Visiting Grandma Pass it On
This morning when I woke up, I was thinking about my grandmother. She passed away around this time about 9 years ago.
My grandmother had nine children, and she raised them all since the time her youngest child was around 8 years old on her own. She was a widow, left with children to feed, cloth, and raise. Her oldest boys went to work, my father included, to provide for the family. The girls helped do the house work, and everyone played an important role in the family from setting the table to bringing home the means of buying bread.
Then those nine children went on to have their own families, and passed on those qualities of family and traits to their children.
There are three things I remember most about my grandmother. She loved to play bingo on Monday nights. She loved to crochet. But every evening, even though her children all had their own families, there was a pot of coffee turn on in the evenings for her boys and hot water boiling for tea for the girls to stop in and visit with grandma.
This was my grandma’s way of checking up on her children and keeping involved in their lives, and this was her children’s way of making sure she never got lonely, that they were always there for one another.
Today, check up on a family member, whether they still live at home or are currently living in a nursing home. Maybe it’s a parent, a grandparent, or an aunt or uncle - go see them today and pass on the love of caring for one another.
What traits will you pass on to your children?
